This SQL Server SELECT TOP example would select the first 10% of the records from the full result set. Let's look at a SQL Server example, where we use the TOP PERCENT keyword in the SELECT statement. ASC is ascending order and DESC is descending order. It is used in the SELECT TOP statement so that you can order the results and target those records that you wish to return. The conditions that must be met for the records to be selected. There must be at least one table listed in the FROM clause. tables The tables that you wish to retrieve records from. expressions The columns or calculations that you wish to retrieve. This may result in more rows be returned than the TOP parameter permits. If the WITH TIES clause is specified, then rows tied in last place within the limited result set are returned. For example, TOP(10) PERCENT would return the top 10% of the full result set. If PERCENT is specified, then the top rows are based on a percentage of the total result set (as specfied by the top_value). For example, TOP(10) would return the top 10 rows from the full result set. ] Parameters or Arguments TOP (top_value) Returns the top number of rows in the result set based on top_value. The pivoting operation will perform an implicit GROUP BY on all source columns not specified in the PIVOT clause, along with the values filtered through the IN-clause.The syntax for the SELECT TOP statement in SQL Server (Transact-SQL) is: SELECT TOP (top_value) The filter can not be a subquery, one must provide here literal values, obtained in advance. The IN-subclause defines a filter: the intersection between the set provided here and the candidate set from the FOR-subclause will be rotated to become the headers of the columns appended to the end result. The FOR-subclause specifies the pivoting column: the distinct values of this column will become the candidate set of values to be rotated. Only one aggregation can be provided, currently. The aggregation_expr subclause specifies an expression containing an aggregation function to be applied on one of the source columns. The clause can be broken down in three parts: the aggregation, the FOR- and the IN-subclause. The column values are aggregations on the remaining columns specified in the expression. The rotation is done by turning unique values from one column in the expression - the pivoting column - into multiple columns in the output. The PIVOT clause performs a cross tabulation on the results of the query: it aggregates the results and rotates rows into columns. If the LIMIT or TOP is specified (cannot use both in the same query), the SELECT statement only returns a subset of the result rows. If ORDER BY is not given, the rows are returned in whatever order the system finds fastest to produce. If the ORDER BY clause is specified, the returned rows are sorted in the specified order. The actual output rows are computed using the SELECT output expressions for each selected row or row group. (See GROUP BY Clause and HAVING Clause below.) If the HAVING clause is present, it eliminates groups that do not satisfy the given condition. If the GROUP BY clause is specified, or if there are aggregate function calls, the output is combined into groups of rows that match on one or more values, and the results of aggregate functions are computed. If the WHERE clause is specified, all rows that do not satisfy the condition are eliminated from the output. Do note however that the table name can be a pattern (see FROM Clause below). Currently FROM supports exactly one table. All elements in the FROM list are computed (each element can be base or alias table).
